What Are Your Aquatic Weed Control Options?
There is very little people enjoy more than a bit of plant genocide, particularly in their pond, or in some cases the fishpond where it’d cause huge problems for both the fish, and for you. Fish do not enjoy moving through a huge underwater forest just like any other creature, so it is best to control those plants at the bottom of your pond, before one of them develops into that man-eating plant from Jumanji.
An excess of aquatic plant life can create problems all the way from watercraft motors being clogged, to poor results while fishing, to children having a horrible time trying to swim through your water. None of those are things you want, so it is best to destroy the source of this problem before it even begins if you can.
You have a couple options at your disposal, options which go from biological control, which is to say the use of fish which simply govern the plant population, to lining the whole pond with plastic…which would be a pretty dramatic measure, but hey, whatever floats your boat.
So let us review a few of your options, and then you may choose which one is best for your situation, but remember that the following are just a very few options, and you should speak with other pond owners, or professionals to discover every single choice available to you.
Harvesting – Ridding yourself of the plants through manual labor, is of course a good choice. Of course, if the plant isn’t situated on the shoreline, or isn’t|is not sitting on the surface of the water, you might discover yourself buying some diving equipment to swim down there without suffocating. If you don’t have knowledge of the ins and outs of diving, or can’t stop breathing for a long time, it’s encouraged for you to consult the experts. As a matter of fact, there’s businesses who work to clean the bottom of bodies of water, so you’ll be pretty well off.
Chemicals – There are a lot of chemicals at your disposal to get rid of this pesky plant life. A few of these chemicals are Fluridone,2,4-D, Glyphosate, Diquat, Endothall. Of course, it’s never suggested for you to use any kind of herbicide or chemical to eradicate the plants, which isn’t dissimilar to the reason it’s never advised you throw an electrical current into the pond to catch the prize fish. Using herbicides may be deadly for fish, in addition to any other life you may have in your pond. Use these with care, or even better, do not use them at all unless you absolutely have to.
Dye – You could purchase a huge selection of chemicals which will tint the color of your water, and therefore lower the volume of sun for any aquatic plant life. it is best to do such in the early spring for best results.
Lining – Covering the bottom of your pond with a type of plastic is also a viable option, this will stunt the development of any aquatic plant life. Remember that it may get expensive, so consider the volume of the pond, as well as the amount of plastic you will need. Naturally that is a viable option for compact fish ponds, but maybe not quite so much for a whole lake in your backyard.
Don’t forget that there’s tons of techniques to stop aquatic life from infiltrating the water, and to discover the technique which is good for you, consult an expert or get together with some other pond owners.
