When preparing for a trip, many people over pack their luggage because they are afraid to leave something behind.

It is true that you want to be fully equipped, but you don’t want to pack so much that it is hard to carry around your luggage or become overwhelmed with the size or amount you have in hand.

Over-anticipating what you need can be just as frustrating as leaving something at home because you will have to transport everything you bring up and down stairs or elevators at your hotel and back and forth to the car or airport.

Pointers from our viewing visit to the Costa Del Sol to buy a villa

My partner and I had wanted to purchase a villa in Spain. Talking with some friends who were also talking about buying a villa it was suggested we join them at a villa exhibition in Birmingham.

To cover more ground, we split from them deciding to meet at lunchtime and recommend suitable stands to visit. They were late back however and a phone call revealed that they had brought an ‘off-plan’ villa on the Costa Del Sol, west of Malaga, and were just finishing the required paperwork.

Frankly we thought them to be out of their heads to make such a fast decision. However, they knew that area of Spain well. We were more cautious. However upon their recommendation we visited the same stall and hey presto we had arranged a viewing flight to Spain before you could say ‘tapas!’. I must say though that the thought of a cheap short break in Spain was quite appealing though. A weekend trip cost £95 per person.

Not long afterwards we arrived at Malaga airport and were very impressed with a warm greeting from the sales person, Virgina. We were even more impressed that she knew our names. Our personal escort was very friendly and we were whisked away from the airport in a nice BMW company car.

After viewing lots of villas and developments at both ends of our budget, we visited a development we liked at Casares Del Sol about half an hour from Gibraltar. It seemed to have everything we were demanding. It promised luxury apartments with 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a high tech kitchen, set amidst tropical gardens with 7 swimming pools. Being British we displayed the ’stiff upper lip’ choosing to mull over the prospect during the course of the evening.

We did however view some other developments with Virginia so as to be absolutely sure. There was no pressure placed upon us, the developments almost selling themselves. Virgina gave us plenty of help in seeing the various benefits of exactly where to purchase on a development. Consider for example things as views, noise levels, access as we get older (lift, stairs etc), proximity to pool, rental opportunity

We signed the purchase form for Caseras and spent 4,000 Euros. The lovely Virginia treated us to a slap up meal at Casares. Casares is a pretty traditional white washed mountain village from which our development gets its name. By now she felt more like a new friend than a sales representative. As you can imagine we had many queries about[/apin]] what was to happen next and she was very patient flew back to the UK excited with dreamy thoughts of spending many holidays in our home in the sun. Virgina kept in touch sometimes informing us to progress on the development and even sent the odd photographs of our plot.

My advice is to carefully choose which company you book your viewing trip with. Ask where you will stay for the visit, and of course what is the price. Finally ask loads of questions, put together a list before you go and have each question answered. And once you have chosen your apartment, sign up with a company that specialises in villa furnishing and get them to show you suitable villa furniture packs that are within your budget.

Of the seven islands that make up the Canary Island chain Lanzarote is the most easterly. And is located just off the West coast of Africa – close to what was once known as the Spanish Sahara – around seventy miles away.

Whilst in ancient times the island – along with the other Canary Islands - was thought to be part of the lost continent of Atlantis.

Today though Lanzarote is best known as the Island of Fire. An appellation created by the six year long volcanic eruptions which engulfed the island backing 1730. Burying around one quarter of Lanzarote beneath a sea of molten lava. These eruptions caused widespread devastation and forced many islanders to flee altogether. Although I am very much free to do as I want when on an island vacation, I still find it quite useful to plan and prepare ahead. It is important that you set the exact time and date with the chauffer and other transportation services just so you can visit all the sites as planned. Make sure you have sufficientclothes, toiletries and other documents required when staying abroad.

Meeting People

If you want to experience culture firsthand, one of the best ways would be by meeting people in clubs, beaches and cafes. My favorite spot to meet locals would be in fairs, flea markets and celebrations. I noticethat they are extra friendly and festive during these moments. I would also go on scuba diving trips and nature tours alone, giving me a chance to go with other visitors and make new friends. I remember handing my colibri to this amiable local tour guide with a very distinct Jamaican accent.

Do not hesitate to ask questions and crack jokes once in a while. The good thing about traveling by yourselfis that you are responsible only for yourself. If you want to seek new company, you can always move out and look for new places to enjoy such as golf courses, museums and antique shops.

Another favorite show is to place some brushwood into the ground and then it is pulled out burning seconds later.

There is also a guided coach tour from the visitor center that lets tourists see a little more of the area and the rock formations. All of this makes Timanfaya, Fire Mountain, well worth a visit!

Costa Teguise can be found roughly centrally along the southern coast of Lanzarote, only around a short journey from the island’s capital in Arrecife. The island’s traditional capital of Teguise is only about fifteen minutes’ drive and is quiet, except during its weekly Sunday market, when many bargains and traditional products are to be discovered.

Costa Teguise did not start life as a traditional village, but is a well built purpose built tourist resort. As such it is well laid out with shopping areas mingled around the various beaches and hotels. As with all of Lanzarote’s structures, there are no high rise building in sight and a large choice of villas, hotels and apartments.

Diving is possible from the one or two English speaking PADI and BSAC diving schools, but only really experience dives are carried out as the local playa, Playa Jabillo, at only five metres deep is not sufficient for the majority of training. Most dive schools will run customers along to Puerto Del Carmen or for an unusual treat, along to the lava caves of Mala.

You can go down to the main beach to visit the wind surfing schools and a vast area of sandy beach with the usual amenities and a shopping centre behind it. Some of the hotels in the central area will have direct beach access. The only currently completed golf course on the whole of Lanzarote is located near to Costa Teguise.
